Red Sox say no to Pedro

Pedro Martinez | Mets | Interested: Mets?

The Red Sox this week expressed no interest in bringing back Pedro Martinez, the Boston Herald reported. The newspaper reported that Martinez' representatives approached the Red Sox earlier this week to determine if the club was a possible fit for the 37-year-old right-hander. Martinez pitched brilliantly for the Sox for seven seasons, posting a record of 117-37, and winning two American League Cy Young awards. With a five-man rotation set, John Smoltz aiming for a June 1 return, and prized young arms such as Clay Buchholz and Michael Bowden providing depth, the Sox said they had no room for Martinez, the Herald reported. After finishing out a four-year, $53 million deal with the New York Mets, Martinez is an unsigned free agent who will pitch for his native Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic next month, hoping to prove he is healthy. The Rocky Mountain News reported in its final edition that the Dodgers, Pirates and Indians have "kicked the tires" regarding Martinez, but no offers have been made.
