Free-agent infielder Nomar Garciaparra is choosing between retirement and a one-year contract with the Athletics, FoxSports.com reported. The A's, meanwhile, could increase their pursuits of free-agent shortstop Orlando Cabrera and left-handed reliever Dennys Reyes due to their uncertainty over Garciaparra, another source said. The Phillies, the other team pursuing Garciaparra, reportedly are fairly certain that they will not sign him. "I would not view him as someone who will be with us," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. told the Philadelphia Daily News. Garciaparra, 35, appeared in only 55 games for the Dodgers last season due to left-calf and left-knee injuries. As of last week, he was still working out in Boston and weighing his options.
