Blue Jays have some interest in Cabrera

Orlando Cabrera | White Sox | Interested: Blue Jays? Athletics?

The Blue Jays have some interest in free-agent shortstop Orlando Cabrera, but they need to first clear some payroll, even if it's just a couple of million dollars, the Toronto Globe and Mail reported. The Blue Jays interest in Cabrera extends back for a few seasons. According to the newspaper, the Jays spoke to his agent, Dan Lozano, this winter without getting anywhere but times have changed. The season is getting closer and Cabrera, who made $32 million in a four-year contract that expired after last year, is looking for work and likes Toronto. Toronto could clear payroll by trying to trade third baseman Scott Rolen or a member of the bullpen, the newspaper added. The Blue Jays have considerable bullpen depth, barring an injury. That's why Jeremy Accardo's spring will be watched closely by many people. If Casey Janssen and Brett Cecil can latch on to the Major League roster, the Blue Jays will be in a position to move an arm with some upside, possibly Brandon League's, as a sweetener in any deal. Scott Campbell, who played in the Major League Futures All-Star Game, might also be available, the Globe and Mail added. Oakland also has been mentioned as a possible destination for Cabrera.
